Audit Planning Memorandum

The Audit planning memorandum is a vital document as it is a form of contract between you and the auditee as to the various facets of the audit.

It should contain the following sections:

·        Introduction

·        Audit objective

·        Audit Scope and limitation

·        Prior Identified Risks

·        Significant changes since prior audit (if applicable)

·        Specific Auditee requirements and representations

·        Engagement period

·        Final Communication format

·        Risk owner(s) and report distribution

·        Auditor Independence

·        Internal Audit Staff (this may include IT auditors as well as general auditors, and consultants)

·        Budget

·        General

The document should be signed by both parties to indicate agreement to the content. This prevents scope creep.
